The blackberries  (Rubus fruticosus) receives several names, depending on the region where it grows, such as bush.
The blackberry blossoms are white or rosaceous and the fruit changes color, from green to red and then to glossy black as it matures

The blackberry, whose origins date back to antiquity and classical times, is a delicious fruit that even appears mentioned in the Bible. The Greek playwright Aeschylus (c.525-456 BC) and the “father of medicine”, Hippocrates (c.460-377 BC), tell us about it. In the first century AD, the Greek physician Dioscorides prescribed gargles for the first time with ripe blackberry for a sore throat.

The plants propagate by seeds and their cultivation does not require great soil conditions. They are planted in rows at a distance of 1.50 m and are supported on the trellis by attaching the tender branches and pruning each autumn the old branches.

The multiplication is achieved by plants under glass or burying the green tips of the rods in soft soil.
Its leaves, widely used in natural medicine, are collected from June to September and, for this, the leaves are cut with their stem, using scissors, and thrown into a basket. The leaves are dried in the shade, in a ventilated place, and stored in sachets, free of dust. In August, the blackberries of the bush (its fruit) are collected one by one and placed in baskets or buckets so that they are not oppressed. The fruits have a pleasant acid taste.

Healing properties

The leaves of the blackberry contain tannin, organic acids, especially lactic, resins, pigments, and pectin.

As for its oil, it contains an essential component a dark yellowish-green oil, which in full light gives a red fluorescence, with glycerides of acids in small amounts, as well as saturated fatty acids, especially palmitic acid. The color of the oil is due to the chlorophyll content.

Due to its properties, the leaves of blackberries have antidiarrheal and anti-inflammatory. The use of infusions is recommended in cases of catarrhal irritations and inflammations of the gastrointestinal tract, diarrhea, inflammation and prolonged menstruation.

The leaves of blackberry, externally, can be used in gargles for sore throats, mouth conditions (canker sores, gingivitis, etc.) and in irrigations, against the white flow and excessive vaginal secretions.

Popular remedies

The remedy for diarrhea Pours 1 tablespoon blackberry leaves and 1 tablespoon leaves of raspberry in a cup of water to boil. Cover and let cool. Take 3 cups a day until and decrease as you get better.

The remedy for Hemorrhoids # 2: Use tincture of blackberry (it is acquired in botanical or naturist pharmacies) and soak a gauze with it. Apply on the area affected by hemorrhoids.

Remedy for Hemorrhoids # 2: Make a decoction with a handful of leaves and shoots of blackberry in 3 of water and then make a sitz bath as it helps to deflate or prevent bleeding.

Remedy for diabetes Blend in 500 ml of milk, 100 g of strawberry, 100 g of blackberry, 4 tablespoons of raw oats until a smooth consistency is achieved. Drink one glass daily of this smoothie.

Healthy recipe # 1: Walnuts


Ingredients

-4 cherimoya
-200 g blackberry jam
-50 g blackberry (blackberry)
-40 g pollen

Preparation:

We split the chirimoyas along, we emptied them carefully not to damage the shells and we removed the nuggets. Mix the pulp with the jam and beat everything together. Fill the little boats and decorate with some berries above. We sprinkle with pollen and serve them cold

Healthy recipe # 2: Blackberry jelly


Ingredients (4 servings)
-1/2 cup water
-1/2 cup apple juice
-1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin
-1 cup wine red body with
-1/4 cup sugar
-2 cups (300 g) blackberry (blackberries)
-4 Vanilla ice cream balls to accompany (optional)

Preparation

Mix the water and apple juice in a medium refractory bowl and sprinkle with the grenetina. Let soak about 5 minutes.

Mix the wine and sugar in a small pot over high heat and bring to a boil, mixing frequently to dissolve the sugar.

Reserve eight blackberries to decorate. Add the remaining blackberries to the pot with the wine. Reduce heat to low and simmer slowly for 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

Integrate the hot wine mixture with the grenetine mixture. Transfer the bowl to a bath of ice water and mix slightly for about 5 minutes, until it is cold.

Pour the gelatin mixture into a 23 cm (9 in), square and deep metal baking sheet. Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours or overnight, until set.

To demold, immerse the tray briefly in hot water, about 2 seconds, and invert on a chopping board. Use a knife to cut the gelatin into 2.5 cm cubes. Distribute the jelly among four small serving bowls or serving glasses. Garnish with reserved blackberries and, if you like, add a scoop of ice cream over each serving

Recommendations

The blackberry leaf should not be used for an extended period (more than a week at a time) because its great astringent power can cause constipation or diarrhea or inhibit menstrual bleeding.

Do not consume blackberries that grow near high traffic roads because they will have accumulated toxins from cars.

Avoid eating blackberries or using leaves if you have a kidney or gallbladder disorder.
